When you're feeling uninspired

To be very honest with you, this post just isn’t coming to me today.

Well, it really hasn’t been coming to me for at least a couple of weeks, since I started thinking about what I wanted this month’s post to be about. And it’s not that I don’t have any ideas—I have documents full of ideas for my weekly tips, for Reels, for newsletters, for random social media posts. I have next month’s newsletter kinda planned (it’s time-sensitive so not for this month), and I even have an idea that I’ve wanted to write up for a while, but I’m just not feeling it now. And everything I think of feels boring or like I’ve done it before.

And I’ve done all the things that you should do when you’re uninspired (which definitely includes googling “what to do when you’re uninspired”): step away from it for a while, read a book (um, CHECK), take a walk, try a new creative pursuit, etc. etc. You’ve all heard this stuff before, I’m sure, so even that’s not a good topic! I almost asked ChatGPT to give me some ideas, ffs. (I have very strong thoughts about AI—see my recent IG post on AI and art; see also my friend Jess Snyder’s take on AI and author obsolescence here.)

I’m going to chalk up some of this inability to write the newsletter to being winter here and everything is blah, to being cooped up at home too much (again: winter in Canada), to working a lot lately (happy to report my clients do not seem to be feeling uninspired, at least!), to the pressure I put on myself to make these newsletters good and useful for you.

So, ultimately, I decided that the best thing I could do was just sit in this for a while and not try to force anything. I’ll be back on my game next month; I’m not worried about that.

If you are feeling similarly uninspired lately,  maybe just let it be for a while. I know there are deadlines and commitments and pressure to produce and all of that, and some of those things you can’t ignore. But for the things that you have more space with, you can let them go for a while. They’ll still be waiting for you when you’re ready for them, and they might be better for the break.

Are you feeling the same malaise as I am, or is it just me right now? I hope you are in a much better state and that the words and inspiration are flowing for you!
